History
Diabetes was discovered as early as 1500 BCE as it was described in a Egyptian
manuscript as "too great emptying of the urine" though the term "diabetes" was first
used in 230 BCE.
The first cases were believed to be type 1 diabetes. The treatment for
diabetes was discovered in January 1922, by Dr. Frederick Banting and Charles Best. It was first tested on a 14-year-
old boy, who receive insulin in hope of treating his diabetes. The test was a
success.
Insulin was discovered when they removed the pancreas from a dog, sliced it
up, and froze the pieces in a mixture of water and salts. When the pieces were half
frozen, they were ground up and filtered. The isolated substance was named "isletin"
later renamed to insulin.
