Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes Mellitus more commonly know as Diabetes is when your body displays a level of high
blood sugar, either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (type 1 diabetes), or
because cells do not respond to the insulin (type 2). There is no real treatment for diabetes but
you can take artificial insulin to act as the real insulin that your body cannot produce on its own.
Diabetes affects our blood vessels and nerves and therefore can affect any part of the body.
However, certain parts of our body are affected more than other parts. An example is it can cause
damage to the tiny blood vessels in the retina, allowing them to leak into your eye and block light
from reaching your retina. That creates dark spots or even completely darkened vision—and it
can even cause the retina to detach, requiring surgery. This is called diabetic retinopathy. You can
prevent getting type 2 diabetes In the first place by maintaining a healthy lifestyle but there is no
prevention for type 1 or gestational diabetes.
